What will you do if your thoughts can be read by others? Maybe it will be your worst nightmare. Whether we like or not Social Media seduce us to public our physical activities we make almost everything public. And very soon our mental activities also won’t be private anymore.
Scientists at the University of California, Berkley have developed a brain decoder that uses an algorithm to translate brain activity into sounds and words.
In the study, published in Frontiers in Neuroengineering, scientists examined the brain activity of volunteers undergoing epilepsy surgery as they read text aloud and when they read words silently in their heads
“We’re trying to decode the brain activity related to that voice to create a medical prosthesis that can allow someone who is paralysed or locked in to speak,” Pasley said.
“If you’re reading a text in a newspaper or a book, you hear a voice in your own head,” lead researcher Brian Pasley told New Scientist. “We’re trying to decode the brain activity related to that voice.”
They found out that the voice inside your head, as well as the sound of your own and other people’s voices, activate the same neurons that allow your brain to interpret those sounds into words. The decoder was able to translate words that several of the volunteers were thinking.
But don’t worry, they’re not going to use the brain decoder for evil. “We’re trying to decode the brain activity related to that voice to create a medical prosthesis that can allow someone who is paralysed or locked in to speak,” Pasley said.
The advancement of technology is proving itself bliss to human civilization but we never know it’s going to make all human being a kind of robot or a half human being.
